Clean-up After Hurricane Delta

October 10, 2020

I finally got a chance this morning to take the M2 out and inspect the track. Attached are pictures of what I found. There were a lot of small limbs down and a couple of larger ones that I was able to remove from the track. There is one small tree across the track behind the Planer Mill. I didn't have a saw with me so I was unable to remove it. I will try to get back out there this week with my saw and get it off of the track.

Other than that, the loop is pretty much clear of debris now. I also road out towards Sandersville and cleared the limbs off of the track up to the washout. The limbs that were down on it were larger but easy to move. No where near as many as we cleaned off after Laura.

The washout however has increased in size substantially as you can see in the pictures. It has opened up to about six feet in diameter and probably 12 to 15 feet deep. It has swallowed several of the crossties and the ground around it is unstable. Looks like that is going to be a lot more than a weekend project!

The culvert behind the Planer Mill showed signs of washout also. A couple of the attached pictures show the two small holes that have developed.

Other than that I didn't notice any significant damage anywhere else. Not much cleanup to do on the work weekend.

The existing washout on the Main Line  to Long Leaf Jct is much worse now following 18" of rain.

This is a real mess that will require significant work to repair.
