Team:
Steve Benson, Mike Miller, and Tucker Baker
Accomplishments:
- Completed a proposed plan to repair falling west side wall of machine
shop
- Cleared car knocker shed lead track of brush and reactivated this
track for railcar storage
- Cleared brush away from railroad tank car trucks and trucks are now
easily accessible and visible from the loop
- Cleared west wye leg of brush and vegetation
- Gauged track from wye switch to damaged bridge
- Sprayed car knocker shed lead and all legs of the wye except damaged
bridge
Track Notice 1: Wye is 95% restored and motor cars can proceed on all
legs of the wye under 10 mph except for over the damaged bridge. Please
see attached map as well. Blue for open track, red for closed points,
orange dot represents the tank car trucks. Motor cars can proceed from
the planer mill switch to damaged bridge, or from main line near engine
house to wye switch, then over the final wye leg to the damaged bridge.
Once the bridge is restored, wye is fully open. However, additional ties
are needed on the wye if we wanted to run the M4 railbus over it. Again
please consult map for clarification.
Track Notice 2: car knocker shed lead is now open to railcar storage
from mainline switch to end of track at the cut. A total of 6 panels are
open from the mainline switch. We can now store many sets of log car
trucks here, but we must continually spray herbicide to keep the
vegetation from reclaiming the trucks and track.
Daily Log
Thursday November 14 - used polesaw and cordless hedger to clear
brush away from railroad car trucks and begun clearing car knocker shed
lead track until polesaw broke.
Friday November 15 - Polesaw repaired. Used polesaw and cordless
hedger to finish clearing brush from car knocker shed lead track. Track
open from main line all the way to the cut in track near engine house
Saturday November 16 - Used polesaw and cordless hedger to clear
brush from west wye leg. Gauged track from wye switch to out bridge by
inserting one gauge bar where track was wide (58 inches) and re-spiking
ties that were decent but had spikes had loosened. Sprayed one tank (50
gallons) of herbicide on car knocker shed lead and wye legs. All
trackage received several passes of spraying. As Steve said, "we did a
little logging and a little railroading."
A large family came out late Saturday afternoon to take family photos at
the planer mill and we gave the whole family (about a dozen folks) a
ride in the railbus and we had us a grand ol' time doing it! Great way
to end the day.
Next Steps/ Follow Up involved on these efforts
- Repair final wye bridge
- Clear dead vines and such from car knocker shed lead track so wheels
do not slip
