Accomplishments: - Started needle-scaling 106 - Started painting interior of 106 cab - Operated weed control train on the loop
It was a fantastic and enjoyable
weekend out at Longleaf. The breeze was blowing which certainly made a
difference! Please correct me if I missed anything, a volunteer,
misspelled a name, or anything anyone would like to add. Thank you to
all of our volunteers who came out! A full day with multiple volunteer projects progressing at once. Mike, Wimbly, and Glen continued work on engine 106 with needle scaling rust away and also painting the interior. It's always great to see new faces at the museum! Jason, Everett, David, and Tucker connected the last two rails on engine house - machine shop track #1. After spiking most of the panel down, we inserted a new tie underneath the last track joint to replace the rotten one. The track is now back in service! Tip of the hat to David who was our "Energizer bunny" for the day, keeping us going when we got tired and filled the afternoon with great stories.
Sunday - August 16
Jason and Everett recorded a few
informational and promotional videos at the Planer Mill and in the
machine shop. Next, we used the tractor and shovels to ballast the newly
finished track with dirt to allow the tractor and other vehicles to
cross in and out of the engine house again from that side. After that,
we did some weed-eating around the engine house and the railroad main
line near the engine house. Firing up the M2 and the sprayer tank, we
gave the main loop and the engine house leads a herbicide spray.

Tucker & Jason wrestled them into place. A keen eye will note a gnarly bend in the rail on the right. Spiking it down resolved the issue.

One rail was a half inch too long. Everett cuts 'er down to size.

2 joints done!

When the motor on the grinder caught fire and died, David finished the job with the torch.

|
Cutting is done. Time to make the last joint.

Tucker pounds spikes.

David brings in the first load of ballast.
|
|
When we tried to spike the joint near the Engine House, we discovered the tie was mulch. So, we stopped and dug it out. In 100° heat this was no easy task and took nearly half an hour. David shoves the new tie into place (above).
|
|
After lunch we completed the spiking.

One of the perks at Long Leaf is getting to learn and use the equipment. Jason learned a new skill; collecting, transporting, and dropping ballast.
